A political drama set in Bihar of 1990 is. With its caste arithmetic, traditional satraps and the emerging voice...will an illiterate woman Rani Bharti (Huma Qureshi) survive this? Rani Bharti (Huma Qureshi) is a homemaker and the wife of Bihar is chief minister Bheema (Sohum Shah). All she cares about is her house and her husband. She wants to pack her bags and go back to the village after her husband resigns from the post of Bihar is CM. But her life takes a turn when her husband and Bihar is CM is made to announce the name of his successor. While his party members look excited to hear who has been anointed, he makes Rani his successor, leaving everyone surprised.

In the first episode of the Maharani web series, the story begins in 1998, when Bihar is going through a major financial crisis, and caste wars are rampant throughout the state impacting common people drastically. An example of such an incident takes place when Dileep Ram, who is a Dalit gets killed by Thakur Saheb, a landlord because Dileep refused to send his wife to work at Thakur’s mansion. To take revenge from Thakur and his dominance on Dalits, Naxal leader Shankar Mahto kills Thakur along with eight of his men without the fear of the government and its consequences. This incident leads to big political unrest in Bihar and brings the factionalism in the ruling party out in the open with so many questions unanswered. With all this going in Bihar, Health Minister Naveen Kumar, who feels he was unjustly denied CM post because of his upper-caste background, demands the resignation of CM Bheema Bharti, a popular leader from the backward caste who became the first Dalit CM of Bihar to make society just and equitable. Somehow CM manages to stave off the rebellion from doing filthy politics but not for too long. As a part of a larger political conspiracy hatched by his political opponents, a twist in the story comes in when CM gets shot and grievously wounded in his ancestral village where he had gone to celebrate Chhath Puja (a famous festival in Bihar) with his family including his Illiterate wife Rani Bharti and three children.
